We’re a far way from the future that The Jetsons had predicted, flying cars and all. But that doesn’t mean there haven’t been incredible strides in the automotive world in the last few years. And the future looks incredibly bright, especially at Volkswagen headquarters. The Volkswagen engineers have been putting in overtime, working on both all-electric Volkswagen concepts as well as the already released Volkswagen e-Golf, in order to make for a greener future.
The first of the electric Volkswagen concepts, and possibly the closest to becoming a reality, is the I.D. Buzz. It should be fairly obvious where the Buzz gets its inspiration, only now, the Volkswagen Bus has been tastefully updated to both drive into the future while giving a sly wink to its storied past. With that being said, the differences are stark; when the Volkswagen Bus was released in 1950, its engine was powered by a very modest 30 HP. The I.D. Buzz, with an estimated release date of 2022, will come with at least 369 HP, and will get an estimated 300 miles of range per full charge.
Another electric Volkswagen concept, the I.D. Crozz, will have a top track speed of nearly 180 kilometres per hour, and a DC Fast charging battery that will fuel up to 80% in only 30 minutes. The beautiful exterior with its swooping, stylish lines, is only a precursor to the technology inside, including an Augmented Reality heads-up display, infotainment tablet, and a fully autonomous Pilot Mode. Estimated to begin production in 2020, the electric Volkswagen I.D. Crozz will be both fun and environmentally conscious.
There are two other electric Volkswagen concepts, the I.D. and the I.D. Vizzion, which truly push the limits of what we know about electric vehicles today. Anticipated ranges of 370 and 400 miles, respectively, these two electric Volkswagen concepts change the driver experience substantially, with the I.D. featuring a retractable steering wheel to toggle between driver controlled and autonomous driving, and the Vizzion which is completely autonomous. The technology and layout of these vehicles is unlike anything the modern driver has seen before, and only achieve this difference due to their fully electric makeup.
Of course, one would be remiss to talk about the electric Volkswagen lineup without mentioning the e-Golf. Volkswagen’s first fully electric vehicle, the e-Golf takes the Golf’s proven reliability and performance and makes it battery operated. A 201 km range on a full charge of its 100 kW electric motor, alongside 214 lb-ft of torque, allows the e-Golf to be both sporty and practical. Tasteful changes to the Golf’s appearance differentiate it slightly, but the complete lack of greenhouse gases definitely make it stand out from the pack. Not to mention, a maximum of $14,000 worth of provincial government incentives for e-Golf owners in Ontario, and the e-Golf gets a little more attractive by the moment.
